I spent too much time thinking about this meme...
01.The first character I fell in love with:
My dear L. <3 I was first introduced to him when I saw the first Death Note movie. I loved how he seemed so sullen, intelligent, and child-like. Arc was watching the movie with me and I kept joking about how L's mannerisms reminded me of him. :P It also helped that L has dark messy hair and dark eyes, the kind of appearance I'm attracted to. His mysterious and eccentric personality reeled me in, and I loved that I could never quite figure him out.
02. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:
Misa. At first I must admit that she annoyed me a lot. I was excited when I found out that the second Kira was going to be female, thinking, "Great! We're going to have an intelligent, kick-ass female character!" I felt let down when she appeared to be so airheaded and dependent on a guy who was just manipulating her. Over time, something told me to try giving her a second chance, to put my prior notions aside and really think about her character more. I came to appreciate the intelligence that she does have, even if she hides it behind a ditzy exterior. She may not be as smart as Light and L, but she was able to work with them. Her past was tragic and she was looking for someone to cling onto, some kind of stability and hope, which she thought she found in Light. I feel very sorry for her; I wish she had a better outcome. (Also, in my mind I like to imagine that if L and Misa got together, that it could be very good for the both of them :3).
03. The character everyone else loves that I don’t:
Matt. I don't hate the guy; he seems interesting, but I'm not as rabid about him as some fangirls are. I think it's pretty cool that fandom was able to make insights about what he seems like based on what little we see of him. But really, we hardly know who he is, so I don't have much to go on with him, I guess.
04. The character I love that everyone else hates:
Misa. Guh, some of the comments people make about her fill me with disgust. She's not a slut - she was only interested in Light. She wouldn't even kiss the actor she was working with on that film set because she had a boyfriend. Her "stupidity" doesn't make women look bad. Does Matsuda's "stupidity" make men look bad? Yes, I know that the female characters in Death Note have a reputation for being laced with sexist traits. I'm just going to chalk this up to the author and artist just being poor designers for female characters. (Obviously, I love the story and the majority of what Ohba and Obata did with DN, but seriously, those guys need to learn how to make better female characters. I couldn't even read past Ch. 2 of their latest manga release Bakuman for that very same reason. Sexism ahoy. :/)
Ach, oh dear, I didn't realize that was going to turn into such a rant. ^^;
05. The character I would sleep with anytime:
L. Enough said.
06. The character I’d want to be like:
Not entirely like, but I think I'd like to have more traits of both L and Watari.
L: Despite being introverted, he still has a lot of ambition and is quite willing to take risks. He has a very specific thing he's committed to that interests him (even if it may be selfish). I'd like to be more intelligent like him (but really, how realistic is that??). Also, I wish I had his ability to not care what others think of his quirks.
Watari: I like the sense of dedication he has, whether it's through serving L, establishing orphanages, or inventing. He seems to have a good deal of compassion, which is a good contrast to L's coldness.
07. The character I’d slap:
Light. LOLOL. I don't really hate him; I find him a very interesting character. Still, I often like to make fun of him. :/ I guess it's just his super good-boy image and because he just seems like he'd be fun to mess with. I think it's strangely hilarious when L teases him. :P Then of course, there's the whole Kira thing, I think that deserves at least a slap in and of itself.
08. Favourite character:
L. Does this even need an explanation?
09. Five favourite characters:
L, Near, Mello, Misa, Naomi, B
... that's 6, I couldn't eliminate one. :P
10. Five least favourite characters:
Demegawa, Higuchi, Takada, Takuo Shibuimaru (that jerk guy on the motorcycle, the second person Light killed), Ryuk
11. Character I am most like:
This is hard because I keep seeing traits of myself in a lot of the characters. But I'm not a lot like any of them.
I'd probably say Rem. I identify with her sense of compassion. She's very protective of those she cares about (like Misa) and feels vengeful towards those who hurt them. She also has a nihilistic view of humankind, which I sometimes have.
Or Mogi, because he's quiet, stays in the background, and just does his work. :P
12. DEEP DARK SECRET REGARDING THIS FANDOM:
This isn't much of a secret but... I'm crazily sexually attracted to L. I think about him in that way obsessively. It feels like an addiction. Sometimes I worry that that's the only reason I'm interested in him. Though that isn't true. But still, he's made me the most sex-obsessed I've been since high school... ^^; Oh yeah, and that's also a large reason why I'm addicted to buying doujinshi...
13. A pairing (or more!) I love:
- LxLight - the obsession, the tension, the competition... the handcuffs. :P
- LxMisa - I just think this pairing is beyond cute. I wish there was more love for it. ;_;
- LxB - I mentioned obsession before, didn't I?
...
okay, how about just Lxeveryone? xD
14. A pairing (or more!) I despise:
I wouldn't say despise, more just dislike...
- Raye PenberxNaomi - Ugh, Naomi deserved much better. “You're here now as my fiancée and nothing else,” my ass.
- LightxMisa - mostly I just find it sad that Misa loves Light so much, but he either doesn't care or is manipulating her for his own ends. But I still think it's funny how much Misa's affection makes Yotsuba!Light so uncomfortable. :P
- LightxTakada - pretty much the same deal as with LightxMisa.
15. Five favourite things about the fandom:
- Doujinshi! There's so many good DN ones out there. I love how people take the characters and add on to the canon story, or make up an entirely different story with the same characters. Not to mention the great porn. ;)I wish I could make my own doujinshi, that would be so cool.
- Fanart. There is so much wonderful fanart in this fandom and it's been very inspiring for me to try my hand at drawing again (something I used to do a lot more of, but had stopped).
- The people. I don't know why DN fandom has such a bad reputation, since I've had contact with mostly nice people (though I've got a knack for knowing who's going to be trouble and know to stay away from them...). The people I've met in this fandom have been wonderful and encouraging. I'm so happy to have met you all! You've all helped me break out a little bit from my shy little shell. ^^
- The discussion. I've read many fascinating discussions inspired by DN. I love when people break out the philosophical topics, literary/visual themes, and psychological character analysis.
- Just the porn. Delicious porn.
16. Five least favourite things about the fandom:
- User-based drama. Though this is in every fandom. This person hates so and so because they said/did this... I don't know, isn't it just easier to stay away from people who annoy you rather than complain about it all the time?
- The influx of superficial, immature fans. Probably mostly from when the dubs were released. New fans aren't necessarily immature ones, but I noticed a curious influx of that sort of thing about a year ago when the English dub was released. :/ This might just be the elitist snob in me. Of course, they have a right to enjoy the show the way they want to.
- People who are very quick to peg you as one of "those" fans. I shouldn't care what other people think but it's still a worry of mine. You like LightxL? Oh, you're just one of those superficial fans who only likes DN for the yaoi. And of course, if you like yaoi, you're just a mindless, screeching fangirl. No, sorry, that's just not how it works. :/
- People who are too rigid about things having to be "canon." I love and appreciate things that are with canon in mind; it takes a lot of insight to create and is usually better writing, but there's also room for crazy "what-ifs." It's just all in fun.
- While I like the serious discussion that occurs, I think there isn't enough of it. Most forums I've visited seem too stuck on topics like, "Who's right, Light or L?" (way to miss the point, there. -_-). Again, maybe this is just the elitist fan in me. :/ LJ has actually pretty good for serious discussion and essays.
